IMAGO DEI is delighted to present an exhibition dedicated to the groundbreaking duo COSTUS, whose work captured the vibrant energy of Spain’s cultural transition. The display focuses particularly on Juan José Carrero Galofré (Juan de O), whose striking paintings and works on paper reveal the bold irreverence and satirical brilliance that defined the spirit of the Movida.
Highlights include large-scale canvases such as Torero desnudo (1986), where the theatricality of Spanish tradition is reimagined through a pop-infused lens, and the iconic Hombre Pájaro (1985), a work that embodies the duo’s exploration of identity, freedom and eroticism. A series of rare mixed-media works on paper further demonstrate their radical approach to figuration and color.
Through this selection, IMAGO DEI pays tribute not only to the legacy of COSTUS as emblems of a generation, but also to the individuality of Juan de O, whose vision continues to resonate in today’s cultural landscape.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The duo formed by Juan Carrero and Enrique Naya embodied like few others the vibrant and provocative spirit of the 1980s. COSTUS was not only a key reference of the Movida madrileña but also a testimony to the courage of living authentically in a time of change and rupture with the past. Their work, charged with color, irony, and eroticism, opened new paths towards a different understanding of art and identity.
Paying tribute to COSTUS at IMAGO DEI also means reaffirming our mission: to explore the male figure in all its dimensions, from tradition to the contemporary, from sensuality to transgression.
